In a high-stakes South Central Men’s Division 1 Thames League match, Stoke Green Hockey Club (SGHC) claimed a commanding 7-1 victory over Newbury & Thatcham 4 at Herschel Sports Centre. The match was marked by a blistering start and a stellar performance from SGHC’s Amandeep Singh, who secured his second hat-trick of the season.
The action began swiftly, as SGHC shocked their visitors with three rapid goals within the first twelve minutes. Singh struck twice, with Jasyal Benwara adding another, catching Newbury completely off-guard. This early surge provided an opportunity for SGHC to debut their latest signing, Arron Barolia, who quickly adapted to the intense pace, contributing effectively from the right flank.
Newbury struggled to recover from the initial onslaught, and their difficulties deepened when Amandeep Singh completed his hat-trick with a superb solo goal around the 20-minute mark. Newbury’s rare ventures into SGHC’s defensive half were quickly contained, and when they conceded a penalty corner in the 30th minute, Mandeep Daggar capitalized with a precise drag flick, making it 4-0 at halftime.
After the break, Newbury regrouped, showing renewed energy and determination. They pressured SGHC with early attacks, but SGHC goalkeeper Aran Dhak produced a series of excellent saves to keep the visitors at bay. Despite Newbury’s efforts, SGHC soon regained control, with Jasyal netting his second goal, thanks to an assist from Gurpreet Saini.
Newbury managed to pull one back with a penalty corner goal midway through the second half. However, SGHC continued to dominate, capping their performance with a final goal from Yuvraj Singh, assisted by Veer Patel’s well-placed cross.
It was an all-around impressive display from SGHC, who maintained focus and execution across all areas of play. Newbury deserves credit for their tenacity despite the early setback. Next week, SGHC will travel to Reading, aiming to extend their winning streak and further solidify their position at the top of the table.
